Where can I find the proper distances for the advance placement of warning signs?

The table of advance placement distances for warning signs in the in the Traffic Sign Handbook for Local Roads does not match Table 2C-4: Guidelines for Advance Placement of Warning Signs in the National MUTCD. Which should I use?

Actually, the distances in Table 2 in the Traffic Sign Handbook are correct. The table on page 16 of the Traffic Sign Handbook is an abbreviated version of the Advance Placement of Warning Signs table in the NYS Supplement (NYS2C-4). The numbers in the NYS Supplement are the ones that control in New York State.

The advance placement distances in the National MUTCD are different than the NYS Supplement. The NYS Supplement values include sight distances not in the National MUTCD. Review the previous Quick Answer for more information on what is the definition of the MUTCD in New York State.
