When do we need to install silt fence?

Putting in a silt fence is almost always a good idea. If you are working near a water body such as a pond or lake, it is even more important. You should take good efforts to prevent the spoils of the project from entering the water.

Silt fence, when installed properly, is an effective means of reducing the impact of sediment transfer into a water source. It is recommended to contact your local Soil and Water Conservation District for guidance on any work that is going to occur in or near proximity to any water body. Depending on the specifics of the project, a DEC permit may be required.
