What are work zone traffic control standards in New York State?

Each municipality is able to set work zone traffic control policies, but they must be consistent with the MUTCD. NYSDOT has published guidance for traffic control use in a typical work zone which should be followed unless an agency as adopted their own policy. The advantage of following the NYSDOT policy is the liability protection for the municipality as well as providing a consistent message for the travelling public.

NYSDOT has published their full guide with requirements and recommendations on work zone traffic control. A copy of the NYSDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual as well of other work zone resources can be found on the NYSDOT’s work zone traffic control page.
