Streets: Planning
Safer Communities for
Bicyclists and Pedestrians
Who should attend:
Local officials and planning board or council members for villages, towns, cities
and counties, who are interested in learning the basics of how to safely
accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians in their community.
Instructor:
Lois
Chaplin is the Bicycle
and Pedestrian Specialist for the
Cornell Local Roads Program, Her
background includes 19 years of
experience as a bicycle and pedestrian
traffic safety educator with Cornell
University, designing materials
for educators and law enforcement,
and most recently for planners
and engineers.
Participants will
learn about:
Planning strategies and
basic design and maintenance
principles used in bicycle
and pedestrian friendly
communities. Participants
will also learn how to
do a community assessment
for walkability and bikeability.
Other topics will include
traffic laws, essential items
for one's 'toolkit', education
strategies, multi-use facilities,
and enforcement.
