Geosynthetics in Roadways
This workshop is also sponsored by The North American Geosynthetics Society
Who should attend:
This workshop is intended for engineers or technical staff who design highways and would like to gain a greater understanding of the use of geosynthetics in roadway applications.
Instructors:
Dr. Barry Christopher: A consultant engineer with over 30 years of experience in geosynthetic engineering, Dr. Christopher is experienced in manufacturing, design, installation, and forensic investigations of geosynthetics. He has published over 70 technical papers, eight reference manuals for FHWA, a geosynthetics design manual for the American Society of Dam Safety Officials, a textbook on geosynthetics, two book chapters on geosynthetics in a groundwater engineering handbook and a roadway design manual, and three NCHRP syntheses, two on roadway drainage and one on geosynthetic roadway reinforcement, and was editor for the rewrite of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications sections on anchored, modular and mechanically stabilized earth walls.
L. David Suits: Currently the Executive Director of the North American Geosynthetics Society, Mr. Suits has over 35 years experience in geosynthetics and geosynthetics testing. He is retired from the New York State Department of Transportation where he was the Soils Engineering Laboratory Supervisor, overseeing all testing and approval of gosynthetics for use by the Department. He is past chairperson of the ASTM International Committee D35 on Geosynthetics and the current chairperson of the ISO Committee TC221 on Geosynthetics, and is the author/co-author of over 30 papers, numerous articles, and textbook chapters on geosynthetics.
NAGS Mission: To Provide Leadership in Advancing the Education and Research of Geosynthetics, in strong cooperation with IGS, via the following ways: Organization of and participation in technical conferences, seminars and workshops; Development and dissemination of tools for geosynthetics education; Recognition of technical contributions and innovations regarding geosynthetics; Stimulation of geosynthetics research and their applications through the NAGS Awards of Excellence Program.
Course topics:
This workshop provides training on the appropriate, cost-effective utilization of geosynthetics in roadway applications. The course examines the use of geotextiles, geogrids, and edge drains in pavement structures, and also applications of filtration, drainage, roadway separation, roadway reinforcement, roadway subgrade improvement, and pavement overlays.
