February 2019

The shortest month of the year has a lot of holidays: Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, Lincoln’s Birthday, and Washington’s Birthday …. Some even think of Super Bowl Sunday as a holiday. For most of us, February is the month where we get ready for the upcoming construction season.

Here, at the Cornell Local Roads Program, we are getting ready for not just the spring training season, but Highway School, the fall training season, and even 2020. Like you, we look beyond the spring to plan for the future. Please sign up for our spring workshops, but also put the Highway School, Bridge Conference, and even fall training on your calendar (our fall workshop schedule will be available soon). If you don’t see a workshop that fills your training needs, please let us know. We can bring any of our workshops to you and maybe develop something new. We need your ideas to help us help you.

New Law Change in Effect for 2019 Requires Training

Excavators that work for a local government and their hired contractors, as well as excavators that work for an operator and their hired contractors, will be required to receive training and education as regulated by the NYS Public Service Commission.

Those working on municipal contract have 180 days, until Saturday, May 4, 2019, to fulfill the new requirement.

Dig Safely New York’s Certified Excavator Program in Safe Digging Best Practices qualifies as an educational opportunity that fulfills the requirements of the amendment to the law. To assist those impacted excavators, Dig Safely New York has increased its number of open registration Certified Excavator Program classes.

All classes and events can be viewed and respectively registered into by visiting www.DigSafelyNewYork.com/Events.
