Cornell Local Roads Program
Road Chatter - the Cornell Local Roads Program monthly e-newsletter

View from the Road – David Orr, PE

March – 2019

Hard to believe, but Road Chatter is 5 years old! Over that time, we have discussed workshops, Highway School, news you can use, and miscellaneous items such as wooden streets and snowfall totals. No matter what we included in the monthly notes, the goal was always the same: we are trying to help you help yourself. Below you will find information on our spring workshops, Build a Better Mousetrap, the Highway School, and some other news and events you may find useful.

In our reviewing of old files we found some pictures including a few from the 1954 dedication of our home: Riley-Robb Hall here at Cornell. See if you can recognize the gentleman on the left. Another is an aerial picture of the Cornell campus before Riley-Robb was built. It reminds us that change is inevitable, but we can make a lasting legacy if we keep working and moving forward.

New Law Change in Effect for 2019 Requires Training

Excavators that work for a local government and their hired contractors, as well as excavators that work for an operator and their hired contractors, will be required to receive training and education as regulated by the NYS Public Service Commission.

Those working on municipal contracts have 180 days, until Saturday, May 4, 2019, to fulfill the new requirement.

Dig Safely, New York’s Certified Excavator Program in Safe Digging Best Practices qualifies as an educational opportunity that fulfills the requirements of the amendment to the law. To assist those impacted excavators, Dig Safely New York has increased its number of open registration Certified Excavator Program classes. All classes and events can be viewed and respectively registered by visiting www.DigSafelyNewYork.com/Events.
