View from the Road – David Orr, PE

July - 2019

Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going too fast - you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.

Sometimes we get asked what we do during the summer slow season after the Highway School and before the fall training season. Like most highway and public works departments, our "slow" season is not slow at all. While we do not schedule our highway officials and crew workshops, we still hold those workshops by request. We also have engineering and technical workshops being held all summer long.  [links]

Geoff Scott is on the road with our CAMP Summer Intern Program. If you want to join us in 2020, now is the time to put this into your plans for next year. I am travelling myself with some workshops, but also doing field visits and meeting with our partners. Everyone else is cleaning up from the spring and getting ready for the fall workshops and the 25th Bridge Conference.

Like you, we are preparing our 2020 work plan which will be submitted to the New York State Department of Transportation later this month. We are also getting ready to attend the annual NLTAPA Conference (national conferences for programs like ourselves) in Vermont in August. There we will share ideas, learn from others, and bring back new ideas we will share with you. Our slow season is rather busy; as is yours.

That being said, summer is also a time for reflection and review. We look at what we did in the spring and the Highway School and the lessons learned from each. We hold one of our two annual advisory panel meetings to discuss the future. When we think about the future, we look not just at 2020, but at the years beyond. When you can, do the same. Once in a while we should all take some time to look into where we have been, where we are now, and where we are planning on going in the future.

Thank you for a making the 74th Annual Highway School a huge success!

Over 700 transportation professionals from across the state attended this year’s Highway School!

Conference presentations will be available on the CLRP website soon at https://www.clrp.cornell.edu/trainingevents/highwayschool.html

Low-Volume Road Pavement Design

The Cornell Local Roads Program is developing a new tool to design the thickness of low-volume road (LVR) pavements for town and county roads and village streets.

This workshop will review how pavements fail, how they work structurally, and show attendees when and how to use the new LVR design tool.
