Are municipal employees typically allowed to use municipally owned dump trucks and trailers for the purpose of completing their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) A and B road test?

Yes. Many agencies actually train employees as part of their worker recruitment efforts. It is important to have a policy and be sure that insurance coverage is set up properly. Also, realize that the workers need to be trained by someone who is qualified and experienced in providing CDL training. Make sure that there is a department employee who is specifically in charge of carrying out proper CDL training.

According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles CDL information webpage, preparing for a CDL road test can be done by training with a supervising driver who has a valid CDL to drive the commercial motor vehicle that is used to practice.
